What Is Matte Lamination?

Matte lamination applies a thin, non-glossy polymer film to the printed surface of packaging, creating a soft, velvety feel and a subdued, sophisticated visual tone. Unlike gloss lamination that amplifies color saturation, matte creates a restraint and elegance that has become the dominant finish in premium beauty, spirits, and lifestyle brand packaging. The low-reflectance surface also reduces distracting light glare, which helps printed photography and typography read cleanly under retail shelf and display lighting.

At Brisk Packaging, matte lamination is applied to folding cartons, rigid box wraps, flexible pouches, and labels across virtually every substrate โ€” from kraft paper and SBS paperboard to art card and bux board. The film layer also provides a protective function, significantly increasing the packaging's resistance to scuffing, scratching, and moisture, extending the shelf life and in-store durability of the finished package.

Matte lamination pairs exceptionally well with UV spot coating, where high-gloss UV is selectively applied to specific design elements over a matte base โ€” the spot vs. matte contrast creates a dramatic visual and tactile effect that draws the eye to logos, product names, or hero imagery. This matte-plus-spot combination is one of the most popular premium finish strategies Brisk Packaging produces for retail and DTC brand clients.
